Smart Relays & Smart Protection
Smart Relays & Smart Protection
In recent years, the development of the principle of relay protection is mainly in the fields of transient, wide area and integrated protection. With the development of smart grids, smart relays and smart protections have also been paid close attention to. So today we will talk about smart relays and smart protection, and look forward to their development in the future.
1. Relay/new electromagnetic relay/smart relay
The relay itself is an electrical control device. It is an electrical appliance that causes the controlled quantity to undergo a predetermined step change in the electrical output circuit when the input quantity (excitation quantity) changes to the specified requirements. Over-load or other abnormalities can be on & off, connect & disconnect, thereby converting the circuit, protecting the circuit and the equipment.
New electromagnetic relays, including non-magnetic latching relays and magnetic latching relays. The non-magnetic latching relay is a monostable relay. The relay coil changes its contact output state under the action of a specified voltage excitation, but after the coil excitation is cancelled, the contact output state returns to the initial state. Magnetic latching relay is a kind of bistable relay, divided into single-coil structure and double-coil structure, coil excitation is electric pulse mode.
Although the holding relay can make the device remote control become Smart+Secure, the smart relay is still different from the holding relay we usually mention. When we talk about smart relays, they usually look like this, see Figure 1. The field of application of smart relays will become wider and wider, such as mechanical control in industry, lighting control switches in civil use, and other automatic system control occasions.
Different from the protection of the internal circuit of the equipment, for example the internal circuit protection of the equipment is usually completed by varistors, TVS, etc. during over-voltage, over-current, surge, electromagnetic interference, etc. For external line protection such as household electricity, for example, prepaid meters have built-in latching relays which can cut off the circuit when necessary such as no credit, abnormal events. Compared with the traditional postpaid meter + circuit breaker combination, this relay is more economical and effective to complete the line on and off.
In short, to achieve smart protection, smart devices need to be fully considered. Among them, smart meters with relays can be selected, or ordinary meters with smart relays/circuit breakers can be used.
