What is a shunt
Shunt is an instrument for measuring DC current. It is made according to the principle of generating voltage across the resistance when DC current passes through the resistance. It is generally used to expand the current range with a fixed-value low resistance. Usually in parallel with the moving coil of an ammeter or galvanometer. There are two kinds of connections inside and outside the meter.
principle:
The shunt is actually a resistor with a small resistance value. When a DC current passes through, a voltage drop is generated for the DC ammeter to display;
The DC ammeter is actually a voltmeter with a full scale value of 75mV;
The DC ammeter and shunt are used together;
For example: the resistance value of the shunt matched with a 100A ammeter is 0.00075 ohms;
That is 100A*0.00075 ohm=75mV;
The resistance value of the shunt matched with the 50A ammeter is 0.0015 ohms;
50A*0.0015 ohm=75mV.
The role of the shunt:
To measure a large DC current, such as tens of amperes, or even more, hundreds of amperes, there is no such a large range of ammeters for current measurement, what should I do? This requires the use of shunts.
It is a short conductor, which can be made of various metals or alloys, and its DC resistance is strictly adjusted; when it is connected in series in a DC circuit, the DC current passes through the shunt, and the two ends of the shunt generate a millivolt DC voltage signal. Make the pointer of the meter connected at both ends of the shunt swing, and the reading is the current value in the circuit.
The so-called shunt is to divide a small current to drive the meter indication. The smaller the ratio of the small current (mA) to the current in the large loop (1A-tens of A), the better and more accurate the reading line of the ammeter. This is a common product in electrical circuits, and there are shunt measures for lightning protection.
