How can we ensure leakage protection and prevent electric shock hazards during EV charging?

Pulished on Apr. 16, 2024

In recent years, the rapid growth of the electrial vehicle industry has increased demand for EV charging stations. Manufactures strive to enhance their competitiveness in the booming market. How can we ensure electrical installation protection and prevent electric shock hazards during EV charging?

According to IEC 61851-1, each EV charging stations must built-in a rcd protection sensor module for current sensing and residual current protection. As a leading EV charger components manufacturer, IVY Metering offer safe, reliable and cost-effective leakage current sensors comply with IEC 62955 and IEC 62752 standards that help enhance the protection of your EV charging system. With compact size, multiple installation designs, high reliability, fast response speed, and type B protection function.

The international standard IEC 61851-1 provides two options for smooth DC residual current protection devices in charging stations: either a type B RCD or a type A +DC 6mA detector with appropriate equipment to disconnect the supply in case of a DC fault current exceeds 6mA. For AC and DC charging stations, different EV charging modes have requirements for RCDs. In order to make the electric vehicle safe charging, the International Electro technical Committee (IEC) defined a set of standards, covering devices for protection and electrical installation standards, especially for residual current protection. For mode 2 charging(IC-CPD), the IEC 62752 standard specifies that In-Cable Control and Protection Devices should ensure tripping residual current sinusoidal AC, residual pulsating DC, and smooth residual DC exceeding 6mA, whether suddenly applied or slowly rising. IEC62955 - 2018 ( Residual direct current detecting device (RDC-DD) to be used for mode 3 charging of electric vehicles ) .

After studied the three IEC Standards, we found that TYPE A RCD + A Smooth DC Residual Current Protection is requested. IVY Metering – All type Current Sensitive Residual Current monitoring Unit (RCMU) both for AC and DC. IVY residual current sensors specifically developed for EV-Charging Providing all-current sensitivity. The sensor can issue an Alarm signal in case of hazardous electrical faults ( DC and AC ) according to IEC 62752 or IEC 62955.

Benefits:

Protects against hazardous situations with fault currents, Preserving RCCB type A from saturation in case a smooth DC component in the circuit

Small size and footprint for integration into compact IC-CPD and AC Charging Wall-box

Robust mechanical and electrical design suitable for harsh environmental conditions

Electrical safety at low cost ( compared to TYPE B RCCB)

Integrated self-test functions

Applications

(EV Charging Mode 2 and Mode 3)

IC-CPD in charging Cables for electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).

AC Charging Wall-box for EV and PHEV.

AC Charging piles for EV and PHEV

Besides, it widely used for photovoltaic systems, medical instruments, inverters, battery packs, UPS, smart home, industrial machines, IOT etc.
